I Love Coffee
I love all coffee, although some cups and coffee-based drinks are much better than others. My favorite is a cold-brewed New Orleans style cafe au lait, which I make at home with Community Coffee with chickory and 1 percent milk. My next favorite is a latte (preferably, from the Mermaid Cafe in my neighborhood). But I’m happy to take a diner cup o’ joe, with a little cream, and I’ve usually been the girl in the office who makes sure there’s good strong coffee brewing for guests. I’ve tried to give it up, thinking that maybe I could do without the energy spike-and-drop, but couldn’t. No wonder - I’m of Norwegian heritage and my mom and grandma have a pot on at all times. And my mom drinks it literally until she goes to bed (a habit that I don’t want to emulate but sometimes do).
So. I was pleased to read these two posts at Judith Warner’s blog in which she discusses her memories of coffee. I will have similar memories of my grandma and aunts, cold Wisconsin winter days sitting around the dining table; of my high school friends who would sit together at a diner over coffee; of college writing in coffee shops and running into friends who were also studying there; of meeting friends now for coffee and feeling inclined to linger over another cup.
